Mill Hill School House Style
Refer to year groups using the Mill Hill School convention both in written and spoken communications: Fourth Form, Remove, Fifth Form, Lower Sixth and Upper Sixth (not Year 9, 4th Form, L6 etc) and always capital letters for the name of year group
When referring to pupils use the word ‘pupils’ and not ‘students’
Write dates in the following style - 2 September 2022 not 2nd September 2022 or September 2nd 2022
The default font Size is 12 point and Open Sans, where possible, with Calibri as the alternative, using single spacing as standard
When referring to books, films, song titles, use italics eg Turn the Ship Around
With abbreviations, eg ‘eg’ omit full stops – ie not ‘e.g.’ and Mr rather than ‘Mr.’
Use ‘and’ instead of an ampersand ‘&’ as a default – except where ‘&’ is more natural, eg Assistant Head (Teaching & Learning)
When referring to pupils in formal reports use their full given names from iSAMS
When referring to term(s), use capitals eg Autumn Term
When referring to the School (specific rather than generic) or a House use capital ‘S’ and capital ‘H’, also capitalise ‘Day’ as in Day House, Boarding House and Tutor
When referring to subjects, use capital letters eg Biology, Mathematics, French. When referring to a subject department use capitals eg Mathematics Department, Biology Department
When referring to examinations, write as A Level, GCSEs
All references to numbers should be; one to nine in letters, 10 and above in numerals
When referring to members of staff in reports or letters etc refer to them as eg Mrs/Ms Smith, Mr Jones (ie use title and not first name)
The abbreviated HMM is written in full as Housemasters/mistresses
Competitions and events to be denoted as follows; Inter-House Netball, House Drama Competition, Ten Mile Cup, Farrow Singing Competition, Newcastle Competition, House Hog, Christmas Hog
Use capitals for: The Large and The Mill Hill School Foundation and refer to Mill Hill School by its full title rather than simply Mill Hill (which may serve as an abbreviation for the Foundation)
Where acronyms are appropriate, use: MHS (Mill Hill School); MHSF (The Mill Hill School Foundation); MHI (Mill Hill International)
Written communications should be checked with great care for correct spelling, punctuation and grammar – use English rather than American spellings, eg ‘organisation’ not ‘organization’
