How to onboard Planet Estream Signage

Planet eStream device onboarding configuration and remote support setup

This is based on previous devices sent by Planet eStream, even if there are any changes, same principles can be applied.

Step 1 – Rename the device with location name. Generally keeping ‘M’ for Mill Hill School, ‘B’ for Belmont, ‘G’ for Grimsdell and ‘I’ for International. Along with ‘PE’ as prefix to annotate Planet eStream. This purely for standardisation, no dependencies.

Example – M-COLLINSON-PE

Step 2 – Change the default login password of the device from ‘Amaretto08’ to one stated in PWsafe. After changing this, you will have to disable and enable auto login.

To do this type press ‘windows-key+R’ and run ‘netplwiz’. Under ‘Users’ tab there should be a checkbox for auto login, even if it is checked, uncheck the box and hit apply, once applied, check it again. This time you will be asked to provide new password. Once this is applied, auto login should work normally.

Step 3 – Run the planet estream service, should have shortcut in desktop, if not – look in C:\Program Files\Planet eStream or C:\Program Files (x86)\Planet eStream

You will be prompted to enter two key details, the signage name, give it a unique name based on the location and under the URL put https:\\video.millhill.org.uk

Once details are fed hit connect and it should contact our planet estream environment.

From our eStream portal, given you have correct access, you should be able to permit the newly added signage from Planet eStream > Digital Signages > Signages tab – over here the new signage should be awaiting approval. For the time being assign the signage to MHS group and same for editor group.

Step – 4 TightVNC configuration – This service is already installed on the systems that planet estream ships to us. Its default admin password is ‘3S1gn’. Right click the VNC icon from task tray and click on configuration. On this page make sure to change the primary and admin password to the one in PWsafe. You can give it a view only password as well, also mentioned in PWsafe.

Once this is configured, you can view the device from program such as ‘RemoteRipple’. You should know the IP of the device to connect though. So when it goes to its permanent location, make sure to capture it’s IP from DHCP and reserve the address which will make remote management easier.

Step – 5 Auto windows update - To enable Microsoft Updates, use the Group Policy Management Console. Open Group Policy Management as admin and go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update > Configure Automatic Updates and select Install updates for other Microsoft products. Configure this to be installed at night on every Saturday. It can be configure for checking updates daily as well but weekly updates should be enough.
